5 Reasons Why I’m Quitting Breastfeeding

September 21, 2012 0

This topic is so controversial, and I’ve never understand why. When you have a baby there are posters everywhere on how good breastfeeding is for your baby, every nurse and doctor asks you if you’re breastfeeding, and pretty much once a day random people will ask if you’re breastfeeding.

It seems so strange to me that everyone has an opinion.

For me I was fine with nursing my baby – I didn’t really think about NOT doing it, until I was bombarded with the messages about how good breastfeeding is, how you must breastfeed, how it will help you lose weight etc. All these messages actually made me want to quit breastfeeding. But for a solid 5 1/2 months I’ve been doing it (with the exception of a few days that I’ve been at conferences, or events etc).

And now I’m ready to quit!

For 5 months I’ve been (without realizing it) thinking about all the things I’m going to do when I stop nursing:

1. drink many, many, many margarita’s
2. whiten my teeth (it’s unkown if it’s safe for the baby, so you can’t do it while nursing)
3. get microdermabrasion or fraxel (your hormones are out of whack while nursing, so you have to wait until you’re done)
4. go out for a big, long, girls night of dancing, drinking and giggling & sleep in until noon without having to wake up & feed the baby (now, my husband can do it!)
5. go out for a super long walk or hike without thinking my baby is at home screaming of hunger

It’s funny, when I read through this list it makes me think that this is so superficial & silly. But that’s what gets me upset about being a mother. There’s this very subtle message that’s spread online, in whispers, and straight to your face, that doing “self – care” things after you have a baby are frivolous, selfish and dangerous for your baby.

It’s a terrible message, and it makes motherhood really seem like a big pain in the ass. Enough with the guilt, enough with the propaganda, and enough with the judgements.

I’m going to have a margarita!
