Shacking Up: How to Blend Your Style and His
January 14, 2010 at 1:52 pm 1
Recently I put out a call for guest writers here, so I thought it would be great to start off with one exceptional guest spot from Lilah, a blogger from Urban Sardines, a design and décor blog. Since I made the big announcement that I got engaged, it’s been a bit of a struggle how my fiancé and I are going to combine all our stuff into one small apartment (especially given my penchant for extremely girly home décor like hot pink walls). Enter Lilah, who’s going to offer up some excellent advice on how to blen your style with your boyfriends when you move into together! Here’s Lilah! When you move in with your man, you might expect to fight over who will do the dishes, who will take out the trash, and who gets to pick their favorite side of the bed…but you might be overlooking something far more fundamental. Consider exhibit A:

If your bedroom looks anything like this, you may be in for a bit of an adjustment. Gorgeous though this room is, your man may feel a bit… um, emasculated…. In this space. How do you reconcile your gorgeous, girly décor with his barcalounger? Make It Gender Neutral Finding neutral ground can be a great way to bond with your partner. After all, the space you live in is a significant expression of who you are as a person, so it should also reflect what you are like as a couple. A great way to find neutral ground is to figure out what colors you both like and build from there. To tone down feminine vibes, avoid detail, scrolling, and rounded edges in furniture and major pieces. Once you establish more “masculine” base, you can add pops of color and feminine touches without causing your boyfriend to need testosterone injections. Here are a few examples of spaces that are “gender” neutral: This bedroom from Kishani Perera has dark, masculine colors, but is also very elegant and vibrant:. The bed is a good balance between feminine and masculine, and the pop of color from the flowers brings a feminine edge to the room.

[

Steven Gambrel’s living room design is a great inspiration for masculine spaces that are elegant and gorgeous. It’s a great balance between masculine and feminine. The colors are warm, but masculine, the lines are clean and simple.

Here’s another great Steven Gambrel living room. The orange bar station is modern with clean lines, but the pop of orange has a feminine vibe.

Understand Each Other’s Cleaning Habits Before you move in together, get an honest assessment of what your cleanliness habits are (I’ve known both men and women whose partners complain about each others’ cleaning habits). If your habits differ, consider some modern appliances (without a dishwasher, my boyfriend and I would have split long ago!), and if you can afford it, consider handing over some of the responsibility to the pros. My boyfriend doesn’t do laundry, so he sends it out to an affordable local cleaner every week. Problem solved. Consider Ditching Some Items Review each other’s furniture and decide what you can both live with. When I moved with my boyfriend, he got rid of a clunky, broken desk, and I got rid of my extremely feminine bedding. We are both happy with the results (although I miss my lacy bedding sometimes, and I’m sure he misses his desk). Make a Man Cave If you have the space, let him create his man-cave while you create your girly haven. For my boyfriend and me, this isn’t an option (living in a small urban space, you usually don’t get a few extra rooms to play with). However, I know a lot of couples who have separate offices or art studios where they can decorate to suit themselves. If I had such a space, I’d channel all my girly instincts into that one spot, and let the leather furniture take over in the living room. Compromise, Compromise, Compromise Finally, when moving in with your man, remember it’s an exercise in compromise. You may have to live with his leather couch, but hopefully, he’ll graciously live with your perfume collection, giant collection of heels, and blanket your Grandma crocheted for you. --- Lilah is a writer living in a small Victorian in San Francisco, California. Her small living environment inspired her to explore the world of small-space design. Along the way, she started the blog, Urban Sardines, to share what she has learned about creating a warm, inviting home in a small space.

Want To Look 10 Years Younger?

10 Years Younger Host Myleene Klass

10 Years Younger Host Myleene Klass

Most women notice the signs of aging on their face and bodies and don't know how to shake it. Their skin isn't as tight as before, their eyes are a bit droopy, fine lines are creeping up, and things just aren't as perky as they used to be. Feel bad about it? You're not alone! Recently British tv show 10 Years Younger has had a refresh and is capitalizing on women's fears of getting older and frumpier. The show takes two women, both of whom look like they need a serious refresh, through a journey of self revitalization. While one of the women goes under the knife, the other turns to more natural fixes like facials, better nutrition and accupuncture. While they are getting their appearance in order they also get to figure out their personal style and get a wardrobe makeover, in addition to haircuts and health and wellness advice. Oh, and it's England, so sometimes they need new teeth too! It's amazing to see how the two women look after their transformations! Whatever your position on plastic surgery, you have to admit, it's pretty nice to see ladies have a whole new lease on life from looking good and feeling great.

But the interesting thing is that the women who have had plastic surgery almost always look just as good as the women who took the natural route. Go figure!

Holiday Shopping Made Easy
December 15, 2009 at 9:09 am 0
December is upon us and that means it's time to start thinking about holiday planning - which of course includes coming up with just the right gift for everyone on your holiday list. It's not enough to give a gift card, a bottle of wine, or something equally as impersonal to your friends, family, colleagues and associates. It's no longer ok to just throw something together and pass it off as a present. And re-gifting...well it's just bad news to hand off a present to your friend when clearly it wasn't intended for them. So what's a girl to do? Pressed for time, stressed with work, exhausted by holiday planning, and worn out by the many obligatory holiday parties that just can't be missed? This year it's time to do something completely different. Set aside a full night, a glass of wine, and a computer, and find all your gifts in one go! That's right ladies, the perfect solution is to do all your holiday shopping online this year. Here’s the best site I found to shop online. They have such an awesome selection for every price range and they ship it wherever you want - saving you time, money, and all the frustration from dealing with the hordes of people at the mall! I’m not usually that excited about holiday shopping, but now that I can do it all online and save myself heaps of stress and time I’m really starting to get into the spirit of giving in a big way!

Why You Don’t Want to Cut Your Hair Short
November 5, 2009 at 12:58 pm 2

Like every girl I love having long hair to play with, style, pin up and style down, and add bits of colour every now and then. But once in a while I see a hair cut that makes me want to chop it all off and sport a super sassy hairdo. I love how edgy, sophisticated and easy this hair looks.

But I used to have short hair. So I know it's not that easy. You need to cut your hair once a month to keep it looking good. You always have to have polished clothes and nicely shined shoes, because short hair and sloppy Saturday style just makes you look bummy. And you don't get to mix up your hair style with a huge variety. So everytime I'm tempted to chop it all off I try to remember how difficult it really is. Temptation be gone!

Crafty Lady: A Cool Idea For Used Magazines

Having a hard time parting with your old magazines? Don't want to throw your money out with the magazines without getting anything back? Of course you can donate them to a doctor's office or hospital. But what does that leave you with other than a nice feeling? With this craft idea you still donate your magazines after you are done with them - but you get to keep something too! To make sure you are keeping the good bits of the magazine start a scrapbook with all the pages you like. Collect articles, recipes, decorating tips and fashion clips. Once you've gone through all your magazines take your cutouts and organize them in your scrapbook and paste them in. At the end of the project you'll have all the pieces of the magazine you like, and you'll have a lookbook that can help you solve a meal crisis, decorating dilemna or inspire your personal style.

Skip this Trend: 80’s Fashion Return
October 26, 2009 at 10:19 pm 1
Recently the return of 80's fashion is hard to avoid. Flip through magazines and see pages and pages of clothes that are big, and bright and not particularly flattering. In stores the huge blazers with big shoulder pads and the crazy mix of colours are front and centre. And on tv celebrities seem to be soaking up the 80’s trend in large doses. But it all looks like a big fashion mistake.

kim_kardashian_pointyshoulders

And some mistakes are not worth repeating - 80's fashion is definitely one of those. In case you are in doubt just look back in your photo album from the 80's. Does your teased hair, blue shiny eye shadow and frosted tips coupled with your lace tights, white pumps, striped sweater dress and jean jacket look so good? Keep on flipping the pages and you'll remember how totally ridiculous you look in most of your photos! If you can't resist the 80's it's a trend that works in moderation. There are some pieces that can be incorporated into an outfit for a fun lift, but a complete 80's look is a big no-no. But fun, poppy and silly 80's music is another story though. Bring on the synthesizers and high pitched voices any day! Photo Credit: Smarter Fashion blog

Beauty Test: Are You Aging Your Skin Prematurely?
October 23, 2009 at 12:42 pm 0
One of the major contributors to premature aging is lines on your forehead and a furrow in your brow. If you are wondering how much you move your forehead try a little experiment when you go home. This works well if you live with a family or roommates because you are testing how much you move your face to express yourself. If you don't live with others go to a girlfriend’s house. Whether it's with your family, roommate or friend it's really important you try this as soon as you go home, as you're more likely to be more chatty, and therefore expressive. As soon as you get in the door go to the bathroom. Take some thick tape, like duct tape, and stick it across your relaxed forehead. Make sure the tape is quite tight and extends fully across your forehead from the right to the left side of your head. Then go out and chat normally like you would on any day. You will quickly notice how much you move your forehead and brows to express yourself. To be sure keep your tape on for fifteen minutes so you fully understand how much you move your face. Once you take the tape off your face practice saying something into the mirror without raising your eyebrows or furrowing your brow. You will quickly discover that you can express yourself easily without doing these actions because you will be opening the size of your eyes more, changing the cadence of your voice, or using your hands or body language - all means of expressing yourself without causing wrinkles – and keeping you youthful looking without botox!

Beauty Secret: How To Keep Skin Youthful
October 22, 2009 at 12:36 pm 0

When I lived in Korea I was constantly amazed at how young the women looked. On a daily basis I would come across women that were in their fifties that were virtually wrinkle free. Their skin would be clear and even in tone, and they would have no lines on their forehead, around their mouths or at the sides of their eyes. What's their secret? I found out there are few. But like any good secret it's only worth it if you can share it! So here are the tricks to getting clear and beautiful ageless skin.

Mrs. Yew - a 40 year old Korean teacher from my school

Mrs. Yew - a 40 year old Korean teacher from my school

Stay Out of the Sun Korean ladies believe that sun damage is the number one cause of premature aging. So, to protect themselves they stay out of the sun at all costs. Even on the beach you won't find many, if any, Korean women getting sun on their faces. Instead they will tan their bodies and hide their faces from the sun completely. Always Wear Sunscreen Even though most Korean women avoid the sun at all costs, they wear SPF daily to make sure they are covered in case they do get some sun. And it's easy for them. Almost every facial moisturizer has SPF in it in Korea. Moisturize Liberally Korean women love their moisturizers! As part of the national beauty standard there is no reason to ever go without moisturizer. Moisturizer ensures that your skin never dries out and starts to sag, or show any signs of aging. So Korean women apply it liberally every morning and evening. Use a Separate Eye Cream General moisturizers are not the same as eye cream. And neither is the skin around your eyes compared to the skin on the rest of your face. So Korean ladies always use their eye creams all around their eyes - even on their eyelids. Korean ladies aren't interested in taking shortcuts and using one cream instead of two separate creams, and you can tell how well it works with their gorgeous skin. Watch Your Facial Expressions Ever seen a 25 year old with big lines on their forehead, and a furrow in their brow? At 25 your skin is still young and supple, but continuous pressure from raising or furrowing your brows will result in premature aging. To make sure this never happens to Korean ladies they watch their facial expressions very carefully.

So if you want to keep your skin youthful, or reverse the signs of premature aging, follow the tricks of the Korean ladies, and you'll notice a difference within a few weeks.

What to be for Halloween?
October 16, 2009 at 12:02 pm 1

Halloween is the best holiday! Everyone gets to be silly and put on another personality. Last year was my first glimpse into the full fun of Halloween here in Toronto. To prepare for the celebrations I had a group of girls over to my apartment. We had pre-drinks, and got dressed up together. There was a devil, a Marilyn Monroe type, a Mogatu garbage bag fashion fan, a club kid, Bat girl and Pippy Longstocking(me).

Walking through the halls and down the elevator in my building everyone was dressed up! There was Obama and Sarah Palin’s everyone. But the best costume was this guy dressed up as an ob tampon! When we went out the streets and clubs were filled with costume clad partygoers. At one of the clubs there was a pack of 30 year old guys dressed like boy scouts complete with matching backpacks, pulled up socks and nerdy glasses. It was hilarious!

This year there seems to be an extra buzz about Halloween. Maybe it’s the bad economy that makes everyone want an escape but there’s lots of chatter about this years Halloween costumes, and plenty of parties planned. But I still don’t know what to dress up as!

A few weeks ago I went to Frugal Fashion Week. It was a very cool event, with lots of small designers and boutique owners showing their clothes, jewelry, and beauty products. I went with a friend and we had a lovely brunch accompanied with some mimosas. I’ve never understood why everyone loved brunch but after a light meal, girl talk and a slightly smiley feeling from my mimosa it all became clear! After our brunch we headed downstairs to the silent auction area. I always love to give to charity so I was keen to find something that I could bid on…and find I did! I won the bid for this AMAZING 6 way dress from Fashion Crimes! I went into the store to figure out how the dress worked and was blown away by the various uses and looks for this dress. I’m sure every recessionista will love this! The dress comes in a variety of colours, and I couldn’t resist the bright blue. I got some help from the lovely Robyn, a stylist at the store, who showed me all the different ways to wear the dress. From conservative to downright sexy this dress pretty much has it all! I’m not sure where I’m going to wear it to, but I can’t wait to travel with it. Imagine one dress that’s wrinkle free that will give you six different looks!

Organic Beauty Product Review
August 27, 2009 at 3:18 pm 1

In my constant search for healthier beauty products I stumbled upon some that might just be what I’m looking for! I posted earlier that I wanted to find products that are organic, and more friendly to my little body. Initially I tested out deodorants….without much success. So I turned my attention to moisturizers and cosmetics. I found a multi purpose colour stick for lips/cheeks/eyes/décolletage, called Freedom Glow Beauty Balm from Revolution Organics. It comes in a creamy and compact tube and is perfect for travels! It is long lasting and I loved the bronzed colour – perfect for my olive skin! I also tested out some of their moisturizers and I found an All Over Body Balm that is quite lovely. I really liked it for my hands and dry cuticles. I put it on before bed and when I woke up I had soft and supple hands, without the greasy feeling. So it seems my search for healthier beauty products was not in vain. Yup, now I’m looking sexy minus the guilt!

My Lip Stain Loves Me Long Time
August 12, 2009 at 4:47 pm 0
I have a confession. I’m a lip biter. I have been for years. Every time I apply lipstick it’s mere minutes before I’ve removed it by biting my lips. I’ve tried everything from the very pricey brands to the super cheap drugstore variety but nothing seems to stay on my lips longer than twenty minutes, until…I discovered lip stain! When I first opened the tube, I thought it looked weird. When I applied the lip stain it seemed like I was drawing on my lips with a felt pen, and it smelled a bit strange too. But when I looked in the mirror five minutes later I could still see my lips brightly lit with colour! I checked again in ten minutes and they were still fully coloured then too! I checked every ten minutes and it wasn’t until an hour later that the colour started to slightly fade. And several hours later I still had tinges of colour on my lips! I was so pleased that now I’m a lip stain convert! And the best news? Even the cheap ones work fabulously well. Here’s the $6 one I tested out from Joe.

Photo Shoot for Vitamin Daily
August 11, 2009 at 5:27 pm 0
Earlier this year I was at a photo shoot for Vitamin Daily. On the day of the shoot it was pouring with rain – all the traffic was very slow, even one second outside meant I was getting soaking wet! These were not ideal conditions for my first shoot, but you know what they say to do with lemons – turn them into lemonade! So, I ran home from work, packed all my favourite clothes into a car, as well as my cosmetics and accessories, and hit the road. When I arrived at the location there was absolutely no parking – and for the record I’m a pretty novice driver so parallel parking on a busy street in rush hour is not my idea of fun. A tad stressed, and tight for time, I finally found a parking spot and then rushed to get everything out of the car and into the studio, without getting soaked. Sadly I dropped one of my shirts right into a mud puddle! When I arrived at the shoot there were other girls having their pictures taken too. I wasn’t sure what to expect since I’ve never been on a real photo shoot, and to be honest, it seems a tad intimidating. I thought it was going to be me with hundreds of girls who do this for a living, and maybe I would stand out as someone who doesn’t do this. I’m not bad at hamming it up for the camera…but in some situations when I don’t feel comfortable I don’t want to be fussed over! It turned out to be fun though! All the girls were very friendly, the organizers were nice, and the setting was very relaxed and comfortable. It couldn’t have gone any better. So when it was my turn I hammed it up for the camera – and even complied with the request to do the cheesy glamour shots the photographer was requesting! And at the end we came up with a winning shot that is now on the Vitamin Daily website. You can find me in the Vitamin Daily ambassadors page.

Shopping in Italy
August 10, 2009 at 4:24 pm 1
When in Rome, do as the Romans…and based on how well put together all Romans looked that meant that I also had to put myself together. Of course this meant I had to do some serious shopping! So, on the last day in Rome I set aside a few hours to do some power shopping…and as it turns out power spending! After running around visiting tourist sites all morning I went as fast as I could through the shopping area near the Spanish Steps in search of the perfect purse. I went into all the designer stores, like Hermes, Chanel, Prada and Gucci, but since I was in Italy it seemed only fitting that I buy an Italian purse! I actually wasn’t looking for an extremely expensive designer purse, I was looking for a Furla purse, but given the frusturating shopping experience in Furla I couldn’t bear to have my statement “Italian” purse from that store. So…I splurged…and in a BIG WAY! It was nearing 7pm and all the stores were preparing to close. I was starting to get stressed and I could feel my window of opportunity closing in on me. Was I going to miss out on my dream of buying a fancy Italian purse in Italy? Not me! So with 20 minutes of shopping time left I ran into Prada, all sweaty and dirty and very uncivilized. I was touching everything, moving all the merchandise and not acting very Prada at all. One of the sales people was very patient with me, showing me all the goodies I requested, and then my Prada dream purse appeared in front of my very eyes! I knew it was destiny as soon as I saw the detailing and the perfect mixture of hardware and fine leather.

Confessions of a Laser Hair Removal Treatment
July 28, 2009 at 9:09 am 0
For several years I’ve been shaving and waxing for bikini hair removal and it hasn’t worked out that well. If I shave I get red bumps because my skin is so sensitive, and if I wax I’m cursed with ingrown hair. Waxing makes your hair thinner and weaker, so the more I did it the worse my ingrowns got, and in the end I actually started doing a combination of both. This seemed expensive and silly and I was never that pleased with the results, so after hearing good things I wanted to try laser hair removal. I researched a few different places, got recommendations and then decided to make an appointment. I chose a reputable dermatologist and made an initial consultation. I knew that I wanted to proceed so I put some numbing cream on prior to my appointment. I used the numbing cream Emla, which I would highly recommend to anyone for waxing or hair removal. It completely numbs the skin and you feel no pain. I love it! When I arrived at the clinic I was given a waiver to sign and an information sheet. On the information sheet it says that some people actually burn their skin from laser hair removal….eeeks! This made me a little nervous. In terms of treatment it wasn’t that painful since I’d used the numbing cream before we started. The treatment took about 20 minutes and I was a little red, but it didn’t hurt too much. In some ways it was just like getting a wax – someone is doing things to your neither regions and you are asked to place your body in some very strange positions! Since I’ve had my treatment I’m happy with the reduced hair growth. To make sure the treatments work you are not allowed to wax between laser treatments, but you can continue to shave, so I’ve been shaving about once a week to keep things tidy. One thing I’m not happy with is the ingrown hairs that have developed since my first treatment. My bikini line doesn’t look excellent with my new red bumps. I’ve been using a loofah, but it doesn’t seem to be working. I’m going to call the hair removal clinic and see what they recommend for the ingrowns or what they can do about them. I expect them to help me take care of them, since they helped to create them. I also wasn’t that happy that I received my first treatment without meeting the dermatologist. I was told on the phone that the doctor meets all patients prior to treatments, but when I went in I never met her. It seemed unprofessional to me, and I’ll definitely make sure I meet her next time I go in. My next treatment is scheduled soon, so I’ll keep you posted on how I’m progressing. I’d really like to be hair free by the end of 2009, so it’s important that I stick to my schedule to make that goal.

Nature Smells
July 22, 2009 at 9:51 pm 3

Last month I made a big effort to use more natural products, including natural deodorant and organic moisturizers. In the beginning it was fine, and I didn't notice any difference from my un-organic products. Then, about two weeks later I noticed that I was a bit smelly and was sweating more than I was used to. I thought it was because I was stressed at work and my hormones (smell) were a bit different. But, three weeks in, I knew there was a problem. Natural deodorant does not work for me. This is the second time I've tried to use it, and both times within three weeks of regular use I got really smelly and all my clothes had a lingering sweat scent. So for now, I'm back to regular deodorant. No more lichen and moss deo for me!

Makeup Murder
July 10, 2009 at 6:03 pm 0

I was recently watching a morning tv program and the presenters looked into local women’s makeup bags. I would be soooooo mortified if someone were to look into my makeup case – I’m sure I’d go to cosmetic jail for make up murder and crimes against aesthetics. Almost everything is past the due date, my eye liners are all hard, and my lipsticks are so worn out that I have to dig to get the colour out of the lipstick tubes. It seems like someone is due for a shopping trip, which seems to fit in perfectly with my shopping plans for the afternoon! Photo credit: Ben Nye Lipstick

Statement Dress
June 24, 2009 at 7:19 pm 3
I've been on the lookout for a statement dress recently. I haven't found what I'm looking for exactly, but I did find this knockout dress online. I just love the butterfly inspired mix of colurs, the generous cut of the dress, and the detailing with sparkles and feathers. Can't you just imagine how much fun you'd have in this dress?

Adventures in Beauty: A Fresh Start
June 23, 2009 at 9:34 am 0
I've decided to make an effort to buy more organic and healthy beauty products. With lots of news about parabens and phthalates and other unhealthy items that have potentially toxic side affects I realized it was time to take a bit more care. So, I headed off to the drug store and bought organic moisturizer and natural deodorant..... ...and then I got slightly off track.......and bought some tanning lotion....... It may not have been the best start, but at least it's a start!
