When I was on a ferry from Mykonos to Santorini on our Greece family vacation, I had an episode of the Ikea Monkey Returning
Me, my husband, and my daughter were all sitting next to each other. When the ferry took off, we realized there were a lot of empty seats, and my husband wanted to take a nap, so he layed out and we went to the empty row in front of him. We played, and read a book, and did lots of things you do to keep a one year old entertained on a boring ferry ride, and then she just couldn’t take it anymore and need to crawl around.
I’m pretty relaxed, so I let her scramble along the floor and meet the other ferry patrons (including a French lady who kindly let her eat all her cookies and play with her jewelry). This lasted about 45 minutes. Then it was time to go back to our seat.
When I went back, there was a man sitting in our place, and the monkey and box of wipes I had left behind were gone. My husband was sleeping soundly in the row behind, so he didn’t see anything, and he definitely didn’t have our goodies.
What was I to do?
So, we marched up to the store on the ferry, and I asked if they had a lost and found.
The conversation went like this.
me: Do you have a lost and found?
ferry guy: yes.
me: I’ve lost my daughter’s monkey. Have you seen it?
ferry guy: Was it alive?
me (looking very confused): Oh, Ikea Monkey! No, it’s a stuffed toy.
Luckily, they had our *stuffed toy* monkey and box of wipes, we all laughed, and then I went back to our seat, where my husband was still napping.
